Discovering Joy…

The 3rd Sunday of Advent is referred to as Gaudete Sunday, as we move closer to Christmas, anticipating the joy and celebration of the birth of Jesus, the new Adam. The readings for this Sunday (Isaiah 61:1-2A, 6-7; Responsorial Psalm – Luke 1:46-50, 53-54, 1 Thessalonians 5:16-24, and John 1:6-8, 19-28) call upon us to embrace and rejoice in the Spirit of the Lord. What does that look like? How do you know when you’re embracing and rejoicing in the Spirit of the Lord?

In the Gospel, John the Baptist is asked by priests and Levites, “Who are you?” (John 1:22). Part of John’s response is, “I am the voice of one crying out in the desert, ‘make straight the way of the Lord,’” (John 1:23). Reflecting on John’s response, what do you imagine it was like for him? How would you respond to the question, “Who are you?” In what ways would your response be the same or different depending on who asks the question?

What’s it like to ponder that the same God who created John and inspired his words and actions, desires to do the same for all of us?

Continuing to consider this, in what places or situations do you desire your words and actions to be influenced more by God? What are the places or situations where you experience peace, joy, and a sense that your desire and God’s are united?

Prayer: Gracious and merciful Lord, over the course of the next few weeks, with all the busyness of the Advent and Christmas Season, help us to be open to your inspiration and to cooperate with the glue that is your Grace, so that we might discover that there is joy in each moment.

Peace Dwells Within…

That which was spoken long ago,

Holds true still, even in this day and age.

Peace, it dwells within,

And cannot come from that which is external.

Listen to Paul, who once was murderous Saul,

Filled with conviction,

Really hate, disguised as a passion he thought was right.

The Lord opened his heart,

Corrected his vision,

And led him to turn from his ways.

His conviction remained.

His passion transformed,

From one that was steal.

Redeemed one might say,

By the Way that is true,

By the One who is always waiting,

For the other to come around.

Peace is about embracing possibilities,

Seeking Grace and gratitude,

Being open to ways that differ,

And accepting differences,

Without surrendering to them.

Peace comes in discovery

As well as in re-discovery,

In going out into the world,

Remembering in whose image all are created,

Holding true to oneself,

And allowing others to do the same.

Peace, it dwells within,

But its effects go well beyond.

And let the peace of Christ control your hearts, the peace into which you were also called in one body. And be thankful. – Col 3:15

Receive the Light…

After completing a loop around the central portion of the park, we chose to bear right, stepping off the smoother cement walkways and onto the leaf covered dirt pathways. As we continued moving forward, venturing further along the way, we came across an evergreen tree, nestled between the ones that were bare. Its branches were decorated with a sprinkling of colorful, shiny ornaments. A pleasant surprise, making us glad we had stepped in that direction, going forth another way, different than what we first intended.

In a world filled with so many choices, what a blessing that no matter which path one might choose or be led unto, there is often something bright to be discovered, and always, there is the Light of God. It shines in each moment of each day… whether from above through signs of wonder… from within through hopes and dreams, and all that one may envision… or from the words, actions, and examples of others.

However, in the midst of Light, shining since the beginning of time, how dark the world must have seemed, when Mary and Joseph were turned away, struggling to find a place to birth their child. And, how dark the world must have seemed when Joseph and Mary fled Bethlehem with the infant Jesus. How dark the world can seem at times today.

Yet, despite the darkness, nothing can stop the birth of Jesus and the fulfillment of God’s plan for each of us. Nothing can take away the Light one chooses to receive.

The grace of God shines forth with love and honor, opening doors, making space, creating outlets… building up goodness in so many ways.

God is light, and in him there is no darkness at all. – 1 John 1:5

Shine

Brothers and sisters:
Put on, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved,
heartfelt compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience,
bearing with one another and forgiving one another,
if one has a grievance against another;
as the Lord has forgiven you, so must you also do.
And over all these put on love,
that is, the bond of perfection.
And let the peace of Christ control your hearts,
the peace into which you were also called in one body.
And be thankful.
Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly,
as in all wisdom you teach and admonish one another,
singing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs
with gratitude in your hearts to God.
And whatever you do, in word or in deed,
do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus,
giving thanks to God the Father through him.   – Colossians 3:12-17

Discovering the Path…

Upon reaching the other side of the bridge, a path of light appeared across the top of the water. Prior to that point, and from various other angles, there was no evidence of any such path. It was only through staying the course, while continuing to look around, that the reflection of light that was there all along could be seen as clear as day, creating a path where before there was none, or so it seemed.

Each of us has unique characteristics. At times these qualities can surface in ways that may tempt us into being at odds with each other or seeing each other in lop-sided ways… as not having enough in common to make trying to work together and work through conflicts a worthwhile endeavor. It seems this is often the case in today’s world. However, in most cases, when both sides honestly strive to be united with God and each other, we are able to move into a position where the light shines and the path becomes abundantly clear.

A fish cannot drown in water,
A bird does not fall in air.
In the fire of creation,
gold does not vanish,
the fire brightens.

Path

 

At the End of the Day…

The other day as I was in the car waiting to pick up one of my children, I was looking toward the top of the school steps as a sea of students flowed out of the building. As I was watching for my child, suddenly there was a knock on the car window. Startled at this unexpected knock, I turned toward the window to see my child’s face. While I was looking in one direction, my son had appeared from another direction. This was something new and completely unanticipated.

When the two disciples on the road to Emmaus encountered Jesus, they had no idea who he was (Luke 24:13-35). They were not expecting him and could not have anticipated that Jesus who had been crucified would appear to them. They were with him for quite some time and it was not until after he broke the bread and said the blessing that they were able to recognize him. It was as if in that moment everything came together and they turned their heads to see what was in front of them as they journeyed.

When they return to Jerusalem to tell the others about Jesus appearing to them, they learn that Jesus has appeared to Peter too. Then as they are recounting what happened to them along the way to Emmaus, Jesus appears again (Luke 24:36-49). Each time Jesus appears, it is unanticipated and unexpected. It is also in response to hearts that are troubled… hearts that are longing… hearts that believe and that are trying to find or to put the pieces back together… striving to continue to live out of a relationship that was, that is, like no other.

In all these cases where Jesus appears, it seems the person(s) to whom he appears is letting their guard down and openly thinking, speaking or trying to understand their experience. They are remembering and recounting what transpired. They are looking at where Jesus was, wondering about what happened and where he is now. They are also watching, waiting, and listening. In doing so, wherever they are, Jesus is suddenly with them and making himself known.

On the road to Emmaus, the two disciples recalled with each step all that transpired. Jesus joined them and their hearts were burning as he helped them to take an intimate look, to remember, and to see, perhaps with new eyes. The Lord also appears to others, including us, helping us to remember or to reclaim and to go forward or to wait… helping us to know more surely, more confidently, who we are and how to be.

As we go through life, God is with us from before our first steps, and all the way through. Sometimes we need to rest, and allow the Lord to help us recount and remember.

Our soul waits for the Lord,
Who is our help and shield.
For in the Lord our hearts rejoice;
In God’s holy name we trust.
May your mercy, Lord, be upon us;
As we put our hope in you. – Psalm 33:20-22
