Ask and you shall receive

World View…

Walking through a store the other day, as I was browsing, I came across a world globe. As it caught my eye, I drew closer to it. Remembering from much younger years, and experiencing once again, a sense of joy and awe at the magnitude of the earth and all that it contains. Then, placing my hand on the globe, I began to spin it gently, looking more closely to see if it was a current day version or one from the past.

Despite its “old world” look, the globe was up to date in its representation of the countries of the world. Spinning the globe again, a little faster this time, I was struck by the smoothness of it and its spin. It is something how, what appears to be so smooth, can be so split and divided. Then as I began to walk away, I turned back. The globe no longing spinning now, still split and divided, but still together, still one planet.

It is amazing how God creates and sets things into motion, placing so many parts, of all kinds, together. Then, as different as they may be, and despite all that may go awry, hearts that truly seek goodness, find it.

Draped in Green…

Surveying the area, an array of green could be seen across the land and against the backdrop of blue provided by the sky. It can seem so easy, almost effortless, to appreciate and recognize that which is pleasing or good to the eye. That which is good for the soul, though, can sometimes be elusive or require more time, patience, and insight.

In the seventeenth chapter of the Gospel according to John, in verse 17, Jesus says, “Consecrate them in the truth. Your word is truth.” These sentiments are part of a prayer to God prior to Jesus’ arrest, trial and crucifixion. Jesus knows the ugliness that lies ahead for himself and the disciples, both those in front of him and those to come. However, he also knows it is temporary and that the sacred beauty that exists within all creation, the seeds that have been planted, and the fruit that will be born is eternal.

Imagine Jesus’ prayer as an ongoing prayer for the well-being of humanity. “Consecrate them in the truth. Your word is truth.”

God’s word is truth. It is found in Scripture, discovered through the life, death and resurrection of Jesus, and revealed by the Holy Spirit, prompting, sometimes prodding, and often quietly guiding us to truth, both the kind that is pleasant, and the kind that is not.

So whether draped in green, saddled in mud, or somewhere in between, Truth will always find you, and gently bring you home.

Sorting and sifting…

Sorting through and folding a laundry basket full of clean clothes the other day, I came across a couple of socks with holes worn through them. They were not repairable and so the decision as to what to do with them was easy. Oftentimes in life, we face similar decisions in terms of deciphering what to get rid of and what to keep. Sometimes it can be as clear cut as sorting through laundry and other times it can be difficult to see the way to proceed.

When it (the net) is full they haul it ashore and sit down to put what is good into buckets. What is bad they throw away. – Matthew 13:48

The above Scripture verse is part of a passage in which Jesus is giving comparisons as to what the Kingdom of Heaven is like and states that in the end, the angels will be separating the good from the bad. However, as we walk through life on earth, we also need to separate the good from the bad and the good from the better, as we strive toward Heaven.

Frequently, what is less than good, parades around in disguise and can slowly and subtly pull us inward, or downward and away from where we seek to be. On top of that, what enables one’s soul to shine most brightly and what is good for us, often goes against the grain of the world in which we live. It is challenging to say the least and perhaps, even discouraging at times. Still though, we are called to be aware and to choose wisely, whether we are sorting through the obvious or sifting through the “not so clear.”

The LORD appeared to Solomon in a dream at night.
God said, “Ask something of me and I will give it to you.”
Solomon answered:

“You have shown great kindness to your servant, David my
father, because he walked before you with fidelity, justice, and an upright heart;
and you have continued this great kindness toward him today, giving him a son to
sit upon his throne.

Now, LORD, my God, you have made me, your servant, king
to succeed my father David;
but I am a mere youth, not knowing at all how to act.
I serve you in the midst of the people whom you have chosen,
a people so vast that it cannot be numbered or counted.
Give your servant, therefore, an understanding heart
to judge your people and to distinguish right from wrong.
For who is able to govern this vast people of yours?”

The LORD was pleased that Solomon made this request.
So God said to him:

“Because you have asked for this—
not for a long life for yourself,
nor for riches,
nor for the life of your enemies,
but for understanding so that you may know what is right—
I do as you requested.
I give you a heart so wise and understanding
that there has never been anyone like you up to now,
and after you there will come no one to equal you.” – 1 Kings 3:5-12

Fortunately, we are not alone in this endeavor of trying to choose what is good, and to choose wisely. There is aid around every corner and in each nook and cranny there is Wisdom waiting to be had. All we need is to ask.
